Drywall Calculator
Calculate drywall sheets for room walls, ceilings, or known board area. Subtract openings, choose 4x8 or other sheet sizes, add waste, and review approximate screws, tape, and compound.

Formula explanation
Core drywall estimate basis
Purchase area = net drywall area x (1 + waste); sheets = purchase area / sheet coverage
- Opening area is deducted from the combined wall and optional ceiling area before waste.
- The result rounds up to purchasable whole drywall sheets after adding waste.
- Screw, tape, and joint-compound quantities are rough planning allowances, not an installation specification.
Worked example
Single wall with 4 × 8 drywall sheets
12 ft wall × 8 ft high, 4 × 8 ft sheets, no openings, 10% waste
- 1Wall area is 12 × 8 = 96 sq ft.
- 2One 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft.
- 3Add 10% waste to get 105.6 sq ft; divide by 32 and round up.
4 whole 4 × 8 ft sheets for 96 sq ft of wall at 10% waste, before allowing for any unusually complex cuts.
Estimate assumptions
Check these assumptions before ordering
- Wall and ceiling geometry is calculated before openings are deducted.
- Sheet size must be selected by the user because common products vary.
- Screw, tape, and compound estimates are approximate secondary planning estimates.
Measurement checklist
How to measure
- Measure room length, room width, and wall height for room mode.
- Use direct total-area mode when you already have measured wall or ceiling area.
- Add the total area of doors, windows, and other openings that should be deducted.
- Choose the sheet size you expect to buy before reviewing rounded sheet counts.
Avoid these errors
Common mistakes
- Deducting openings after adding waste instead of before.
- Forgetting ceiling area when the project includes ceilings.
- Assuming screw, tape, and compound estimates replace manufacturer instructions.
- Using sheet area without rounding up to whole purchasable sheets.

Verify before ordering.
Use the output as a planning baseline. Site conditions, product coverage, waste, supplier units, installation method, and local requirements can change the final quantity.

Common questions
Use the result with context
01Can I include the ceiling in a drywall estimate?+
Yes. Room mode includes a ceiling toggle so ceiling area can be added separately from wall area.
02Can openings be deducted?+
Yes. Enter total opening area and it is deducted before waste and sheet rounding are applied.
03How many 4 × 8 drywall sheets do I need?+
Each 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 square feet before cuts. Divide the waste-adjusted drywall area by 32 and round up. For 96 square feet of wall with 10% waste, the estimate is 4 sheets.
04Are the screw, tape, and mud estimates exact?+
No. They use approximate planning rates. For final screw spacing, finishing levels, joint tape, and compound coverage, follow the wall assembly requirements and the selected product manufacturer's instructions.
